L'équipe nationale algérienne , tenante du titre, a été éliminée au premier tour de la Coupe d’Afrique des nations 2021, après sa défaite face à son homologue ivoirienne sur le score de 1 à 3, en match comptant pour la 3e et dernière journée du groupe E, disputé jeudi au stade Japoma de Douala (Cameroun).
Les buts ivoiriens ont été inscrits par Franck Kessié (23e), Ibrahim Sangaré (40e) et Nicolas Pépé (55e) .
Cette victoire était une revanche de la Côte d'Ivoire contre l'Algérie qui l'avait écarté en quart de finale de la CAN 2019 selon Franck Kessié qui a affirmé ceci :

Nous avions un contentieux avec l'Algérie parceque l'édition précédente , en Egypte , elle nous avait sortis et nous n'avions pas digéré. Aujourd'hui , nous avons eu la possibilité de la faire sortir et nous l'avons fait " a réagi Franck Kessié , désigné homme du match .
